Canadian Performance Rights Fee Set
« on: May 31, 2014, 08:38:30 PM »
Canada's equivalent of SoundExchange (collecting for Internet Performance Rights) has set the fee for 10.2 cents for 1,000 performances. (A performance is defined 1 listener listening to 1 song.) If my math is correct that means that each time a listener listens to a song the fee will be .000102.

That doesn't sound like much but if you have a decent amount of listeners, and multiply listeners X songs X .000102 over a month you come up with a bit of change owed. That rate is much lower than SoundExchange's Pure Play rate, but not nearly as good as the rate small broadcasters operate under here in the States.

If StreamLicensing was operating under the standard Commercial Pure Play agreement the fees we (and you) would pay would go up astronomically.

You can see the Canadian News Report here: http://fyimusicnews.ca/post/85944224822/copyright-board-sets-rates-to-be-paid-by-music-sreaming

Canadian affiliates: Please note that at this time, StreamLicensing fees do NOT cover this new performance fee requirement by the Copyright Board of Canada for Canadian broadcasters.
