Monitoring Your Streams & Silence
« on: December 14, 2011, 06:20:38 AM »
Not sure if this is the best place to put this, but I like to monitor everything to know at an instance if one of my servers is having a problem. I use Nagios (http://www.nagios.org) for monitoring my network. I have a plugin that monitors to ensure my streams are active and if a stream is not active it will send an email alert to me.

However, an occasion recently happen to me, that all my streams was active, but I had nothing but silence on the feeds. So does anyone know a way to monitor for silence on a feed?

I have both Linux & Windows servers at my disposal.

Sorry if this is the wrong area for this.

Clint

Not sure about a program to use but it might be useful in the meantime to give some contact details to a few of your regular trusted listeners. I am sure one or two could give you a message of some sort if the stream goes down or you have dead air. Just a thought ;)

RockRadio1's low-tech solution is a good one.  I hope to add stream and silence monitoring to the StreamLicensing panel sometime this coming year, but it is down the development list a good way.  If anyone knows of free standing software in the meantime that does any of these features this would be a good place to let us know.

That was how I found out last time, someone contacted me letting me know what had happen. I will tinker around with it some more and see what I can develop or come up with. Shouldn't be too difficult, but before reinventing the wheel wanted to see what others may have already come up with.

Interesting, Clint, that on CRTech a member is asking the same question.  I'm interested to see what responses he gets.  We can easy code so that stream alarms could alert you, and there are software silence monitors as you know available but how to determine if the audio is stuttering or buffering is a little more complicated.  And how to build that capability into our StreamLicensinng panel is the solution I seek.

Hi Marvin,

Yeah I saw that post on CR Tech as well, thought hmmm most be a higher power.

Here is the suggestion they have: http://www.pira.cz/eng/silence.htm

Which I love this program I downloaded it last night and played with for a few moments, I love the fact that I can tie it in to my serial port, now wondering if I can tie it all in to my alarm system and have it alert me... OK that may be a bit extreme, but the possibilities are endless.

Another place to monitor your stream is:

http://www.streamverify.com

It checks up or down, not for silence.

You could combine streamverify.com with the http://www.pira.cz/eng/silence.htm software and pretty much have it covered.

I use mediMon. It's free, and works great. Works on Windows, Mac, and Linux.
